cardiac rehab exercise after heart attack

Would you like to:

Feel happier and healthier?

Have more energy?

Feel confident that you can exercise safely and not stress about your heart constantly?

Feel confident about your heart?

Get back to cycling, running, the gym or your favourite exercise class?

I didn’t realise it was possible to feel ‘good’ again - I thought that being sick and taking so many medications meant I would be tired and stuck inside for the rest of my life. After completing my 12 week programme, I can now walk for several miles without getting breathless, I have more energy (no more afternoon naps) and I can stay up later. I’ve even started lifting weights - something I had never tried before but I can really feel the difference in my posture and the way I walk. I am so glad I took that first step to getting fit again.

What is included?

What is included?

Your programme will include physical exercise in a safe and structured manner. Every session, we aim to improve your cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength. Small and sustainable changes are implemented into your daily routine each week, that become healthy habits for life.

You will be given information and guidance about nutrition – how to improve your current diet AND make it tasty. Our aim is to help you eliminate the unhealthy food felons: trans fats, highly processed foods and added sugars. We show you how to do this without crash dieting and without having to eat boring or tasteless food. Guaranteed weight loss and habits that will be with you for life.

Throughout your programme, you will have regular assessments - this means that you will be measured at regular ‘check points’ to ensure you are achieving the results that you want and need. Below are some case studies of people with a variety of clinical conditions and the results they achieved.

    • Stephen, age 68, Diabetes - Weight loss of 15lb and reduction in diabetic medication after 12 weeks
    • Susan, 55, Heart Attack - Full recovery from heart attack and started a regular gym programme after 6 week programme. Achieved 10lb weight loss, reduction in cholesterol and improvement in health after just 12 sessions.
    • James, 42, Stenting - Ex-Marathon runner who had a heart attack during training and subsequent stents inserted was able to return to running.  He completed a full marathon 6 months later.
    • Jack, 70, Heart Failure - Improvement in fitness and exercise capacity – at the beginning of the programme became breathless walking to the door; after 6 weeks working on breathing and building stamina he was able to walk 3 miles without stopping.
    • Jane, 39, Breast cancer - Increase in energy and faster recovery time after surgery and chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. The programme was one exercise session per week for three weeks, with a break for the week after chemotherapy.
    • Chris, 50, Prostate cancer - Reduction in uncomfortable symptoms, maintenance of muscle mass, 10lb fat loss and increased confidence. Chris was undergoing long term hormone treatment for prostate cancer. Initially starting with 2 sessions per week for 12 weeks, this dropped back to 1 session per week as he began to perform more exercise by himself.
    • Caroline, 57, no health conditions - wanted to lose that 'middle aged spread' and have more energy. After 12 weeks of subtle changes to her diet, improving her water intake and exercising a few times per week, she lost 1 stone and has maintained it. In her words 'I feel great, have more energy and best of all have stopped craving sweet things, which means I can keep the weight off and stop yo-yo-ing!'.

What do I need from you?

What do I need from you?

We will talk through your programme before you commence to ensure that we have every chance of success. Our personalized programme needs to suit your personality, working hours, social life, past experience and of course your likes and dislikes.

Going through every aspect in great detail is crucial to you enjoying and succeeding in your programme. We need you to be committed to your health for the long term and understand that this is a lifestyle, not a quick fix.

You will need to make healthy eating and exercise a priority. This does not need to take up too much of your valuable time. In fact, when you are fitter and eat better you will become MORE efficient and have MORE time to do the things you enjoy.

Our programmes are for those who are committed to living a long and healthy life and are willing to make the changes needed to achieve this. There’s no such thing as a quick fix and I don’t promote crash diets. Conversely, I’ll push you outside of your comfort zone and we will do a lot more than you’ll be doing in your NHS cardiac rehab classes.

Do I need a doctor's referral to enter the program?

If you have a medical condition then a referral from your doctor is very helpful.  Alternatively, with your permission we can contact your doctor or hospital to find out more about your condition to ensure your safety throughout your programme. I usually need information about your health condition, surgery or procedure and a current list of medications.  If you don't currently see a doctor regular and have no prior health condition then you may join our programmes with your consent.

Will my doctor receive regular reports?

Yes - with your permission, our programme will give regular progress reports to your doctor. You will also receive a copy of these progress reports. We perform regular reassessments to keep track of your achievements and can also adapt your programme based on these results.

What do the exercise sessions involve?

The exercise sessions will involve alternating between cardiovascular work (raising the heart rate) and weight (resistance) exercises. The exercise sessions will be circuit based and will involve rotation around number of exercises. This means that we can maximise each session. We will always work to your ability and all exercises are safe and structured to you and your health. We can do a wide variety of things during your programme - go outside jogging, ab exercises and my favourite, ‘beat your own time’ challenges.

Where are you based?

You can train at our private studio at East Molesey, Surrey (KT8). Alternatively, we can do sessions over video/Zoom.

Why is exercise important?

There is a wealth of evidence to prove that physical activity plays a key role in improving people's health and well-being. Patients who attend cardiac rehab reduce their risk of complications and recover faster. Research has shown that people who exercise regularly reduce their risk of developing cancer and diabetes.
